Solutions to Help with Fatigue

Living an Optimum Life includes experiencing happiness, excitement, fulfillment and satisfaction, all while dealing with the opportunities and challenges encountered along the way. Keeping these experiences in balance is sometimes a struggle itself.

At times, people may eat more than they should, have low energy or fatigue, and feel nervous, anxious or depressed. These are usually signs that something is out of balance and it's time to take a closer look at what's going on so everything can be brought back in line.

"The causes of fatigue are numerous and need a thorough evaluation," said Dr. Kevin O'Neil, Optimum Life® Medical Director for Brookdale Senior Living. "Fatigue can be the manifestation of depression and boredom, but also can be associated with cancer, an underactive thyroid, sleep disturbances and a host of other medical conditions."

Therefore, those experiencing fatigue are encouraged to speak with their health care professional to rule out any serious conditions.

For general fatigue, there are ways to help. Below are some suggestions to integrate into everyday living.

  • Rest.

Adequate sleep is essential to keep a mind and body rejuvenated for everyday occurrences.

  • Exercise.

Physical activity benefits both the body and mind.

  • Eat right.

Healthy eating makes a difference. Don't use smoking, overeating, drinking, drugs or caffeine to cope with stress. This will only make it worse.

  • Relax.

Signs of stress can include fatigue. It's important to take time alone to clear the mind and think of pleasant things or nothing at all.

These types of activities can relax a person, put them in a better frame of mind, and give them the positive energy they need to move forward.
